The Rules of Discfighting

A discfight is an absurdist rendition of a cinematic wild west gun duel. The two contestants, armed with "holstered" frisbees, and with "gun" hands clearly not touching frisbees, face each other at a mutually agreeable distance. A "holster" is a Velcro nexus between player and frisbee, wherein a patch of Velcro glued to the top center of the frisbee is partnered with another patch affixed to the player's clothes, in classic cinematic wild west holster position. An agreed upon signal occurs indicating the beginning of the crucial phase of the contest. At this point each player has the freedom to fetch his frisbee from its "holster" and toss said frisbee at the opponent. At the same time, this freedom of aggression is counterbalanced by a prohibition against defensive maneuvers. Neither player may dodge his opponent's thrown frisbee but rather must present an immobile, treelike target for his opponent's throw. If one player throws and misses and the other contestant has not thrown, the other player has a reasonable amount of time (on the order of 10 seconds) to complete his throw except that he may not throw after his opponent's frisbee touches the ground behind him.

For each contestant there are two possible outcomes of the encounter. A contestant is said to be "killed" if he is the first to be hit by frisbee or the first to dodge or if he is hit or dodges simultaneously with his opponent being hit or dodging. Otherwise, the contestant is "not killed". Either or both contestants may be "killed" in the encounter, and either or both may be "not killed".

Discfighters of America maintains a rating system to allow discfighters everywhere to compare their accomplishments in the sport. There are two possible ratings, "alive" and "dead". Each new player begins as "alive". If a player engages in a discfight and is "not killed", then his rating remains "alive". If a player engages in a discfight and is "killed" then his rating changes from "alive" to "dead". The rating "dead" is a permanent rating, and players with rating "dead" may not engage in further DOA-rated discfights.
